The year 2020 came with many challenges as well as successes in the world of women. One of such achievement and history was the appointment of Prof. (Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson as the first female Vice Chancellor of one of Ghana’s premier Universities, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The Council of the KNUST at its 258th Special Meeting held on Thursday, June 25, 2020, made the appointment and this was testimony of performance as the then Pro – Vice Chancellor.
Her appointment for a four-year term took effect from August 1, 2020, a time the education system across the world was finding the perfect ways to keep education at its peak despite the coronavirus pandemic.
“I look forward to realising a University where if Ghana, Africa or the world questions, KNUST will be ready with the answers!” she said on her day of induction.
Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson began her career as a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the year 2000. After leaving to pursue further studies in the UK, she returned to Ghana in 2007 and continued lecturing at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
In 2009 she was promoted to a senior lecturer and further to an associate professor in 2014. In September 2018, she was appointed the Pro Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, making her the first female to occupy the position.
Prior to her appointment as Pro Vice Chancellor, she was the Dean of the Faculty of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences. Prof. Dickson currently serves as a board member of the Pharmacy Council and Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana.
